Thetraveljunkie.org – Exploring Uluru – Kata Tjuta by helicopter is truly one of the most breathtaking ways to experience the Red Centre of Australia. Operated by Professional Helicopter Services, this unforgettable journey takes you above two of the country’s most iconic landmarks – Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas). From the sky, you can witness the endless desert landscapes, the striking red rock formations, and the dramatic contrast between earth and sky that make this part of Australia so magical. What makes this flight even more special is not just the video footage, but also the opportunity to capture unique stills along the way. I brought my Fujifilm X Half camera to document the adventure, adding a nostalgic film-like touch to the experience. The half-frame format allowed me to double my shots and experiment with angles that highlight the raw beauty of the desert. These photographs complement the video perfectly, creating a travel documentary that feels both cinematic and personal.
From above, Uluru’s size and spiritual presence become even more apparent. The helicopter circles around the monolith, offering uninterrupted views of its surface, rich with textures, caves, and colour variations. As the sunlight shifts, so too does the appearance of the rock – from deep crimson to glowing orange. The aerial perspective reveals features you simply can’t appreciate from the ground, giving you a true sense of scale and significance.
Flying towards Kata Tjuta, the helicopter offers sweeping panoramas of its 36 massive domes. Known as “many heads,” this sacred site looks even more surreal from the air. The valleys, ridges, and hidden pathways between the domes showcase a side of the landscape that’s rarely seen by visitors. It’s a humbling experience, reminding you why this region holds deep cultural meaning for the Anangu people, the traditional custodians of the land.
For travellers planning their trip to Australia’s Red Centre, I highly recommend adding a helicopter tour over Uluru and Kata Tjuta to your itinerary. It’s not just sightseeing – it’s a way of experiencing the land from a new perspective. Combined with on-ground walks and cultural insights, the aerial view completes the journey and gives you a well-rounded understanding of why this landscape is so iconic worldwide.
This video, part of my G’day Australia Travel Series, is more than just a travel vlog – it’s a travel documentary that blends cinematic footage, aerial views, and Fujifilm X Half photography. If you’re looking for inspiration for your next adventure, or simply want to see Uluru and Kata Tjuta from above, this is the perfect starting point. G’day Australia – let’s fly!
