Thetraveljunkie.org – After a long week of work and city life, we decided to unwind with a relaxing afternoon exploring Brisbane. There’s something incredibly soothing about hopping on the CityCat ferry from Teneriffe—gliding across the Brisbane River, feeling the breeze, and watching the city skyline slowly approach. This time, our destination wasn’t just the city centre, but a hidden culinary gem for Indonesian food lovers—Sendok Garpu by Bunda Alicia. Tucked away in Brisbane’s vibrant inner-city, Sendok Garpu is more than just a restaurant—it’s a warm hug from home for anyone missing the bold, comforting tastes of Indonesia. As soon as we stepped inside, the familiar aroma of garlic, chilli, and spices hit us, instantly transporting us back to memories of family dinners and street food stalls. The atmosphere was casual, friendly, and perfect for an early dinner catch-up.
Feasting Begins: Nasi Kuning Ayam Goreng. We started our food journey with Nasi Kuning Ayam Goreng, a fragrant yellow rice dish paired with crispy fried chicken and spicy sambal terasi. The rice, rich with coconut milk and turmeric, was soft and aromatic, while the chicken had a satisfying crunch and juicy interior. The sambal was the highlight—fiery, bold, and balanced with that unmistakable punch of fermented shrimp paste. Each bite reminded us why Indonesian cuisine is so unique and deeply satisfying.
Next Stop: Pempek Palembang. Then came a true street food classic from South Sumatra—Pempek Palembang. These savoury fish cakes were chewy yet light, served with a generous pour of cuko, a sweet and sour vinegar-based sauce with a spicy kick. The combination was addictive. It brought out nostalgic smiles and sparked conversations about favourite childhood snacks and street food vendors back home.
Final Bite: Tahu Pong with Sambal Kacang. To round off the feast, we ordered Tahu Pong, deep-fried tofu with a crunchy shell and soft interior, served with a rich, spicy peanut sambal. It was the perfect balance of textures and flavours—nutty, spicy, and slightly sweet. Each bite paired wonderfully with an icy-cold Bintang beer, which felt like a little toast to Indonesian flavours under the Brisbane sun.
Good Food, Great Company, and River Vibes. The afternoon wrapped up with us feeling full and content, soaking in the riverside views and reflecting on how lucky we are to enjoy such authentic Indonesian food so far from home. If you’re ever in Brisbane and craving a culinary escape to the archipelago, Sendok Garpu by Bunda Alicia is the spot. This early dinner wasn’t just a meal—it was a delicious reminder of culture, memories, and the joy of sharing food with friends.
