ORMISTON GORGE, WEST MACDONNELL RANGES | AUSTRALIA WALKING TOUR | ALICE SPRINGS | TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY

Thetraveljunkie.org – If you ever find yourself out in the Red Centre thinking, “Reckon I need a proper wander before I melt into the desert,” then mate, Ormiston Gorge is where you wanna chuck yourself next. Sitting pretty in the West MacDonnell Ranges, it’s one of those spots where the outback serves up a big ol’ smack of beauty straight to the eyeballs. I rocked up with my camera, a half-warm water bottle, and the classic Aussie confidence of someone who clearly underestimated the sun. The track kicks off easy enough – red rocks, ghost gums, and that crispy desert silence that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into your own nature documentary. A few minutes in and boom – the gorge opens up like nature’s own cathedral. The waterhole is the show-off of the family, glistening like it knows travellers have been calling it “one of the best” for yonks. Honestly, you stand there and think, “Struth, how is this even real?” The reflections alone make you feel like a National Geographic photographer, even if you’re just holding a Samsung.

Then you start climbing. And lemme tell ya — the slope doesn’t muck around. The trail snakes along the rocky ledges with views over the whole gorge, the kind of views that make you stop, swear under your breath, and pretend you’re just “admiring the scenery” so no one knows you’re puffing. Every corner has a new lookout, and every lookout screams, “Take a photo, ya drongo! You’ll want this as your phone wallpaper later.”

By the time you hit the high point of the loop, you’re cooked, the flies are having a party on your face, and the sun’s blasting down like it’s personal. But the scenery? Bloody unreal. It’s the Red Centre in full glory: layered cliffs, ancient riverbeds, and colours that look Photoshopped. I swear the rocks here have more shades of red than a Bunnings paint section. This is where travel photography dreams go to flex.

The descent into the ghost gum-filled riverbed feels like walking into a different world. Cool shade, soft light bouncing off the gorge walls, and that peaceful vibe that makes you forget you nearly rolled your ankle five minutes earlier. Whether you’re filming a walking tour, snapping long-lens wildlife shots, or just pretending you’re Bear Grylls without the questionable snacks, Ormiston Gorge gives you everything.

By the time you make it back to the carpark, sweaty, dusty, and proud of yourself, you realise why every traveller, hiker, and photographer bangs on about this place. Ormiston Gorge isn’t just another walk — it’s a must-do outback experience, a photographer’s playground, and the perfect slice of Alice Springs adventure. If you’re planning a trip to the West MacDonnell Ranges, chuck it at the top of your list, charge your camera, and don’t forget your thongs… the footwear kind, ya filthy animal.
