Thetraveljunkie.org – Our journey leaving the magical Raja Ampat began early in the morning. At around 7 AM, we left Avinsea Homestay aboard a boat with Yannis, our trusted local guide. The sun had barely risen over the crystal-clear waters when we said our final goodbyes to the island paradise that had embraced us with warmth and wonder. As we cruised out, we could feel the bittersweet emotions lingering—excited for the next leg, yet deeply moved by what we were leaving behind. Halfway through our journey to Waisai, the weather suddenly turned. A morning storm rolled in, with grey clouds blanketing the sky and the sea growing restless. It was a humbling moment—one that reminded us of the raw power of nature in this remote corner of the world. Despite the heavy rain and choppy waves, the boat pushed on steadily. The crew remained calm, seasoned by experience, and we held onto the adventure spirit that Raja Ampat had instilled in us.
As the storm began to clear, the ocean gifted us with a farewell unlike any other. Out of the mist, we spotted a few majestic whales gliding in the distance, their movements calm and graceful. Moments later, a dugong surfaced briefly near our boat—a rare and unforgettable sight. These final glimpses of wildlife felt like a blessing, as if Raja Ampat itself was waving goodbye in its own magical way.
We arrived in Waisai around 9 AM, soaked but grateful. After a quick rest and warm smiles exchanged with locals, we boarded the ferry to Sorong around 10 AM. The ferry ride was peaceful, offering us time to reflect on the adventures we had experienced—from vibrant coral reefs and turquoise lagoons to unforgettable connections with people and nature. The ferry glided across the calm sea, bringing us closer to the bustle of the city.
By 1 PM, we reached Sorong. It was a return to civilisation, yet the echoes of Raja Ampat were still vivid in our minds. We checked in at Aston Sorong Hotel—a comfortable place to rest after a long day of travel. The hotel offered the perfect transition space to recalibrate after days of rustic island life. We indulged in a proper meal, sorted through photos, and mentally prepared for our return to Jakarta.
The next day, we boarded our Garuda Indonesia flight back to Jakarta, hearts full and memory cards overflowing. This journey had been more than a trip—it was a profound connection to one of Indonesia’s last paradises. Raja Ampat left a mark on our souls, and as we soared above the clouds, we knew we’d carry its beauty, people, and wild spirit with us forever.
