Thetraveljunkie.org – There’s something special about discovering the sounds of Indonesia through vinyl records. From psychedelic soul and funky grooves to vintage surf rock and soulful melodies, Indonesian music from the 1960s, 70s and beyond has a character all of its own. In this episode of Tiny Desk Vinyl Sessions, join Bowie Holiday as we take a musical journey through Indonesia’s fascinating record collection, celebrating the artists, musicians and sounds that shaped an unforgettable era of Indonesian music. This session is all about digging deep into the crates and bringing some seriously groovy Indonesian records back to life. Featuring legendary names such as Guruh Gipsy, Broery, Koes Plus, Benyamin S, Massada and Harry Roesli, alongside contemporary favourites like Thee Marloes and Naif, this selection explores the beautiful connections between psychedelic rock, soul, funk, surf music and Indonesian musical traditions. Every record has its own personality, from hypnotic rhythms and experimental arrangements to warm vocals and irresistible grooves.
One of the things I love most about collecting Indonesian vinyl is the diversity of sounds you can discover. There are records that feel incredibly modern despite being recorded decades ago, unexpected psychedelic arrangements, funky basslines and melodies that instantly transport you somewhere tropical. Whether it’s the adventurous spirit of Guruh Gipsy, the timeless sounds of Koes Plus or the soulful performances of Broery, these records remind me how rich and exciting Indonesia’s musical history really is. It’s not just about collecting old records; it’s about keeping these sounds alive and sharing them with a new generation of music lovers.
As always, this session is recorded directly from vinyl. No AI. Just original records, a turntable, and the beautiful sound of music spinning. I love the little imperfections, the warmth and the character that come with playing records. For me, vinyl is more than a format; it’s a way of connecting with music, discovering forgotten gems and appreciating the artists behind every recording. So sit back, turn up the volume, drop the needle and enjoy this Indonesian psychedelic soul, groove and surf funk journey with me.
