On a mesmerizing New South Rock Island tour, I embarked on an unforgettable snorkelling adventure, exploring some of the most iconic sites: the Clam City, German Channel, Long Beach, and Big Drop Off. This underwater travelogue uncovers the breathtaking beauty and diverse marine life that make Palau a world-renowned destination. The journey began at the Clam City, an aptly named underwater metropolis teeming with vibrant coral reefs, colorful fish and giant clams. Schools of snapper, butterflyfish, and angelfish wove intricate patterns around towering coral formations. The calm, crystal-clear waters made it easy to marvel at the intricate details of the reef, from its swaying sea fans to its neon anemones. With every breath through the snorkel, the Clam City revealed more of its magical underwater residents.

To my amazement, I discovered a profound connection between Palauan ancestry and Indonesia, particularly regions like Halmahera, Sulawesi, and the eastern parts of the archipelago. This revelation was not just a lesson in history but a celebration of our shared Austronesian identity. Palau, a picturesque island nation, is renowned for its pristine waters, lush landscapes, and rich culture. Yet, its history is equally captivating. The exhibits at the museum highlighted the migration patterns of the Austronesian people, showcasing how these ancient mariners navigated vast oceans with remarkable skill. Genetic and linguistic evidence point to roots tracing back to Southeast Asia, including the islands of eastern Indonesia. These connections are vividly brought to life through traditional Palauan canoes, intricately designed and remarkably similar to those found in Indonesia. The market, held on December 13, 2024, was a vibrant celebration featuring live bands, dance performances, and a variety of vendors. As we wandered through the festive stalls, the air was filled with the enticing aromas of local delicacies and the sounds of traditional music. To our surprise, we heard a familiar tune—”Nona Manis,” an Indonesian folk song—being sung in Palauan. This unexpected fusion highlighted the cultural connections between Palau and Indonesia, showcasing how music transcends language barriers. “Nona Manis,” meaning “Sweet Girl,” is a traditional folk song from Indonesia’s Maluku Province, popular throughout the archipelago. Hearing it performed in Palauan at the night market was a testament to the shared musical heritage and the blending of cultures in the Pacific region.

Our flight, a combination of Jetstar and Qantas airlines, provided not just a seamless travel experience but also a unique perspective of the landscapes we explored. From the snowy peaks of Queenstown to the sunny warmth of Brisbane, this journey highlighted the beauty of both countries. Our day began with an early morning departure from Queenstown Airport. As the sun rose, the sight of snow-capped mountains surrounding the airport was nothing short of magical. Jetstar’s service from Queenstown to Auckland was efficient and comfortable, offering stunning aerial views of New Zealand’s rugged terrain. Flying over lakes and mountain ranges, it was hard to say goodbye to the South Island’s natural wonders.
