Myself, Women and The History of Personal Violence

Traveljunkieindonesia.com – When from YSIK sent me an email a few weeks ago, asking me to write for “16 Days for Forever”, an international campaign about violence against women which was held on 25th November – 10 December 2010, I said yes and I thought this writing was going to be easy. I thought I could finish this writing quickly and simply. I was wrong. My experience with violence has never been easy. My life as a woman has never been easy either.

The most difficult thing in writing this is that I didn’t know where to start or how I should speak. I don’t know the limitations on things to discuss. How do I make this writing, or perhaps I should call this a testimony,  light, easy to read and understandable for many people. In the end, this is going to be heavy. Violence has never been light. It should neverbe taken lightly. If so, we’ll be losing our humanity.

Malenge Island: A Beautiful Village in Togean

Traveljunkieindonesia.com – Malenge Bajo Village is really one of the most beautiful villages in the world. Malenge island is remote and secluded, with wonderful snorkeling just offshore from the village. Some locals, with the aid of nongovernmental organisations, have established excellent walking trails around the mangroves and jungles to help spot the incredibly diverse fauna, including macaques, tarsiers, hornbills, cuscus and salamanders.

I took this photo from hanging out on the rooftop of a island, slowly timing past this quiet fishing village beach. Enjoying the beautiful nature of Malenge is one of the best things to do in Togean.

Top 10 Dive Sites in Togean Islands

Traveljunkieindonesia.com – The underwater attractions around Togean Islands have the potential to compete with Raja Ampat, with the added bonus of being cheaper and less overrun by tourists. However, some local fishermen blithely continue their practice of dynamite and cyanide fishing, so you may find spots that are slightly less stunning than others.

The diving industry in Togean is small but growing, and there’s nowhere else in Central Sulawesi to organise diving/snorkelling trips or rent equipment. Around Togean, the best and most accessible diving spots:

A Public Works Project Threatens Rice Harvest in Remote Indonesia

Traveljunkieindonesia.com – Once upon a time on an island of spices, an old woman went to the jungle to collect rice. At that time, rice stalks grew in the woods, tall and verdant. On her way home, she slipped and fell into a stream. Stuck at the bottom of the river, the grains that she had collected would grow each year, and the woman’s spirit would become the guardian of the springs.

The story may be true only to the people of Wangongira, a remote village in West Tobelo, North Halmahera, North Maluku Province. However, the rice that grows at the bottom of the river really exists. The villagers call it akere mapine, or river rice, and the crystal clear stream molulu, which means “she who tumbled down.”
