Celebrate Chinese New Year With No Shark Fin Soup!

Traveljunkieindonesia.com – Chinese New Year is coming this week. And, tragically, a great deal of shark fin will be eaten during this time.

The Facts – Shark Finning. Indonesia, India, Spain, and Taiwan are the top four shark-catching nations and account for over 35% of the total sharks captured each year. 73-100 million sharks are killed for their fins each year! Most of this is to meet the demand for shark fin soup. For consumers, shark fin is a status symbol flaunted at special occasions like Chinese New Years and weddings.

Hong Kong imports 10,000 tonnes of shark fin every year. 50% of the world’s shark fins are imported in HK. Demand in China is increasing rapidly with the rise of the country’s middle and wealthy classes. As China is the country with the world’s largest population, it’s a huge market for shark fin. Shark fin can fetch $500 per pound. The trade is lucrative. Worldwide, shark populations are in decline. 181 species of shark are on the endangered list.

So, what you can do this Chinese New Year. Whether you’ll be celebrating, casually taking part or just observing New Year celebrations, there are things you can do. The oceans belong to everyone so don’t let some staunch shark fin fan tell you you’re being disrespectful of their culture or spoiling their occasion.

Inform friends and family. If you are celebrating Chinese New Year, tell your friends and family about the problems on the earth with eating shark fin. Advise your dinner organiser to exclude shark fin products from the celebration. And, Choose shark-friendly restaurants

Nias Cultural Passage Bersama Sony a77

Sembilan fotografer profesional, Travel Junkie Indonesia, dan dua pemenang Sony Photo Contest 2011; I Nyoman Haryadi Wijaya (Denpasar) dan Hasan Tribuana (Palembang) menghadiri undangan National Geographic Indonesia dan PT Sony Indonesia dalam kegiatan Sony Photo Trip 2011 “Nias Cultural Passage”. Mereka berkesempatan mencoba kamera profesional terbaru, Sony a77, berkecepatan rekam 12 gambar per detik, diperkuat sensor Exmor APS HD CMOS efektif 24.3 megapiksel.

Sony Photo Trip 2011 : Nias Cultural Passage Bersama Sony a77

Sinar mentari pagi menyeruak dari balik mendung yang mulai berarak pergi, bak menyambut kedatangan rombongan sembilan fotografer profesional di desa adat Bawomataluo, Pulau Nias, Sumatra Utara. Di antara mereka terdapat I Nyoman Haryadi Wijaya (Denpasar) dan Hasan Tribuana (Palembang) yang memenangi Sony Photo Contest 2011, acara dari National Geographic Indonesia bersama PT. Sony Indonesia.

Stop, Smell, and Sea of Time

This was me taking a little breather by the sea.

I had motor-cycled 6km and was on my way to a little cafe perched along the shore. I stopped to notice that the water looked very pretty. And how I love yoga on quality sunset.

It’s funny how I become so calm and peaceful every time I see the sea.

I get this overwhelming sense of belonging, of stillness, of contentment.

It helps me find my happy place.

The Best Jobs In The World

1. Travel Junkie Indonesia
Lucky travel blogger! My style of travel focuses on quirky, human interest stories with an emphasis on culture, social activism, responsible travel, and travel greener. My mission is to create awareness of issues typically not addressed in the travel genre. While many travel pieces focus on mainstream sanitized tourist attractions, I try to push the boundaries of the travel writing genre, traveling solo through off-the-beaten path locations on a quest for unique stories and amazing adventures.

2. Professional prostitute tester
Jaime Rascone is no different than the rest of us in that the erstwhile DJ needs to grab the occasional odd job to make ends meet. But the Chilean lothario has beat all of us by holding the type of fantasy job that just sounds too good to be true: Quality Control in a brothel.

Rascone, an occasional male model and DJ, first happened upon Fiorella Companions in Santiago, Chile while working on a story about the country’s sexual revolution. He was offered the gig by Madam Fiorella, who needed somebody to provide that final “interview” in her hiring process. It goes like this: girls who are interested in working as VIP escorts for Fiorella have to undergo interviews, psychological testing, and a photo session.

The applicants are whittled down to a final six, who are then fucked one after the other in a single day by Jaime. He takes diligent notes on, say, how they moved their hips and whether their groans were adequate, and makes recommendations to the madam. There is even paperwork involved. The strain of the job is actually such that he can only do it once a month, testing around seventy girls or so a year.

3. Director of Fun at a Museum
A six-year-old boy who wanted to become the director of York’s National Railway Museum landed himself a job – as the director of fun. The ambitious youngster got a plum role at the National Railway Museum after applying to replace retiring boss Andrew Scott.

Sam Pointon sent a handwritten letter headed “Application for director” asking for an interview at the centre, in York. The letter listed his credentials for the role, including his expertise on his train set. “I am only six but I think I can do this job,” wrote Sam. “I have an electrick (sic) train track. I am good on my train track. I can control two trains at once.”

Staff was so impressed they appointed Sam an honorary “Director of Fun” and his job will be to bosses how he thinks they can ensure the museum is the most fun place for kids to spend a day out. Ok, maybe this isn’t the best job in the world for an adult, but it certainly rocks the world of a 6 year old.

4. Bike rider-photographer for Google Maps
Google (GOOG) has hired two lucky young men to ride around France on dopey looking tricycles snapping up photos of historical sites that are inaccessible by car. This three-wheeler is a sight with its long pole holding nine cameras, a GPS, a computer and a generator. But the contraption tooling around the French capital needs all that gear to do its job – adding three-dimensional images to Google’s Street View Maps.

The riders, wearing Google tee-shirts and white helmets, are visiting well-known sites such as the Chateau de Versailles, west of Paris, the Jardin du Luxembourg on the city’s Left Bank or Les Halles, in the busy centre of the French capital.

So, What jobs would you add to the list? Share your picks in the comments!

Babae: Traditional food from Bawömataluo

Traveljunkieindonesia.com Ya’ahowu! Babae is traditional food from Bawömataluo, South Nias.

It has unique taste. DELICIOUS! But, for people outside Nias, the taste of Babae is not familiar.

This food is commonly presented only on traditional ceremonies such as giving a name to newly born baby, or wedding ceremony.

This traditional menu consists of peanut smashed with turmeric packed with rice which is cooked on the clay-made cooking pot.

It is mixed with a porridge-like mixture made of white peanut (now usually using soybean). The peanut is boiled and then smashed with turmeric.

5 Reasons to Visit Nias Island

Stone Jumping at Bawomataluo Site

Traveljunkieindonesia.com – I have to be honest and say that when NGIndonesia & Sony Indonesia approached me and asked me to join their photo trip to Nias Island, I didn’t know very much about professional photographic, I’m not travel photographer. But, thank you. At now, I write “a travel photographer” in my bio. Saohagolo banget!

For a place known to outside world, Nias is surprisingly underdeveloped and the earthquake undid any minor steps forward. Don’t expect rapid transport across the island, internet connection or reliable mobile phone coverage. Ya’ahowu!

So, Here are 5 Reasons to Visit Nias Island:

1. History Niassans
Local legend tells it that Niassans are the descendants of six gods who came to earth and settled in the central highlands. Anthropologists link them to just about everyone: the Batak of Sumatera, the Naga of Assam in India, the aborigines of Taiwan, and various Dayak groups in Kalimantan.

Nias history is the stuff of campfire tales in which an exotic people practised head hunting and human sacrifice long after the rest of the world started fainting at the sight of blood. Traditionally, Niassans villages were presided over by a village chief, heading a council of elders. The island didn’t come under full Dutch control until 1914.

The indigenous religion was thought to have been a combination of animism and ancestor worship, with some Hindu influences. Today the dominant religions on Nias are Christianity and Islam – overlaid with traditional beliefs.

2. Sorake Beach & Lagundri Bay
a fish-hook piece of land creates the perfect horseshoe by of Lagundri and the surf break at Sorake, which is said to be the best right-hander in the world. The main surfing season is June to October, and in July and August waves can be more than 4m high. Folks refer to this area interchangeably as Sorake or Lagundri. If you’ve never surfed before, you’re better off learning in a place that is easier to get to and on a break with sandy beach. Popular surfing destinations off Nias include the islands of Asu, Bawa, and Hinako. The wave is superb and has deservedly kept this far-flung island on the international surfing circuit.

3. Bawömataluo Site
Bawömataluo is 15km from Teluk Dalam. This is the most famous and the most accessible, of the southern village. Bawömataluo (Sun Hill) is perched on a hill about 400m above sea level. The final approach is up 88 steep stone steps. House are arrenged along two main stone-paved avenues that meet opposite the impressive chief’s house, thought to be the oldest and largest on Nias. Outside are stone tables where dead bodies were once left to decay.

Although Bawömataluo is still worth exploring, tourism is in full swing here, with lots of eager knick-knack sellers. There are also culture display of war dance (Baluse), traditionally performed by young, single males, and stone jumping. The latter was once a form of war training; the jumpers had to leap over a 1.8m-high stone wall traditionally topped with pointed sticks. These days the sticks are left off – and the motivation is financial.

4. Gomo & Tetegewo
The Village around Gomo, in the central highlands, contain some of the island’s best examples of stone carvings and menhirs (single standing stones), some thought can be found in the village of Tundrumbaho, 5km from Gomo, Lahusa Idanotae, halfway between Gomo and Tundrumbaho, and at Tetegewo (beautiful hill), 7km south of Gomo.

unfortunately, Gomo is virtually inaccessible. Getting to Tundrumbaho involves a tough two-hour uphill slog through the steamy jungle. From Lagundri, getting to Tetegewo is possible, but it’s a long trip – it’s probably only worthwhile if you’re interested in this type of architecture. the ancient megalithic monuments is incredible for cultural tourists.

5. Museum Pusaka Nias
Jl. Yos Sudarso 134A, Gunung Sitoli. Museum Pusaka Nias has a good collection of woodcarvings, stone sculptures and ceremonial object. The garden has an interesting display of local plants and herbs and some models of traditional Niassan architecture.
